Bread fortified with a variety of vitamins and omega-3 DHA has been
launched by independent UK bakers Warburtons. The loaf is designed
to help increase DHA intake among pregnant women.

UK independent bakers Warburtons is targeting pregnant women with the launch of its 'Good Health Loaf for Women' fortified with key vitamins and omega-3 DHA, as part of its Good Health range.

Warburtons claims that mothers and children can increase their omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake by simply having a couple of slices a day of their specially conceived loaf.

Launched last month, the loaf contains 30mg of omega-3 DHA per 100g of bread and reduced salt. The company claims that eating 100 grams of the bread will provide 52 per cent of the recommended daily amount (RDA) for calcium, folic acid and iron - nutrients recognised as beneficial for everyone, but particularly for pregnant women, said Warburtons.

According to nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton: "All women need a diet rich in DHA for a healthy brain structure, calcium for strong bones, and iron for energy, especially during menstruation. These nutrients become crucial during pregnancy when adequate levels of DHA, calcium and iron are vital for both the mother and growing foetus."

She added that women planning to become pregnant have a special requirement for folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in their babies.

The company also cited increasing evidence to suggest that omega-3 DHA can benefit pregnant women by aiding brain development in unborn children, and helping new mothers after birth to combat post natal depression. It is also claimed to be an essential nutrient for young children, continuing to build and develop a healthy brain.

Warburtons' Good Health Loaf for Women is currently available across the UK at the retail price of 75p (€1.10).
