US manufacturer Vintage Italia is launching a new range of bow tie-shaped pasta chips this summer.

The business, which sells better-for-you pasta chips in more than 15,000 locations, is to roll out the Pasta Bow Ties in four flavors: Honey Butter, Meatball Parm, Creamy Ranch and Smooth Cheddar.

They will be sold in a five-ounce bag in the grocery channel priced at $3.69, and the business is also developing a larger bag for mass distribution.

Vintage Italia chief executive officer Jerry Bello told BakeryandSnacks he believes anything that can be done with pasta can also be done with pasta chips.

Light and crunchy

“Making pasta dough requires leavening and using very hard wheat — this combination allows us to create light snacks, with a great flavor that also have crispness and crunch,” he added.

Produced from non-GMO ingredients at the business’s manufacturing plant in Orlando, Florida, being baked made the Vintage Italia products much lower in fat than fried snacks, said Bello.

Similar carb content to other chips

And he added that although many consumers think pasta contains more carbs than other snacks, Vintage Italia’s Pasta Chips have a similar carb count to most snacks in the chip category.

Vintage Italia was started in 2013 and, as a relatively new company, growing distribution was a focus for the business, said Bello. He is hoping appearing at this month’s Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago will raise awareness of the Pasta Bow Ties and help to secure listings.

Bello said he was expecting annual sales of around $15m from Vintage Italia Pasta Chips in 2016.
