Genius Foods recalls gluten-free products after gluten findings
Genius Foods and five UK supermarkets have recalled gluten-free products as they may contain gluten.

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose have recalled items which could be a health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten.

In addition to making Genius products the Bathgate Bakery in Scotland, which was acquired in 2013, also makes private label products for UK supermarkets and the Livwell brand.

Genius Foods said the products affected contain a ‘very low level of gluten’ and by industry standards are considered to be of ‘very low risk’ to gluten-intolerant customers.

“Our regular testing procedures have shown that a dry ingredient used in very small quantities in the baking process of the affected products was the source of the gluten contamination. This has now been removed from the bakery," it added.

“Any product under 20 ppm is considered, by industry standard, to be safe for gluten-intolerant consumers to eat. Products which test between 21 ppm to 100pm are consider to be very low risk, although not officially gluten free.

“The affected products tested between 5ppm (our minimum accepted level for all products) and 80ppm – therefore the risk to consumers by industry standard is very low.”

Genius said Livwell Gluten Free Crumpets with a ‘Best before’ date: 21.06.15, Livwell Garlic Naan dated 09.07.15 – 28.08.15 and Genius Crumpets dated 18.06.15 – 26.06.15 are affected.
