Milling-quality wheat fetches premium of £50 a tonne

The shortage of milling wheat has led to UK farmers being offered a premium of as much as £50 a tonne (approximately €57 at today’s rates) for their best quality crops.

Although yields were exceptionally high this year, a wet summer harvest has led to poor overall quality. This has led to a shortage of wheat suitable for milling, and it has been forecast that as millers pass higher prices on to manufacturers, the price of baked goods – and bread in particular – will rise.

With such a high premium on offer, farmers are being advised to get independent analysis of their crop in order to pinpoint the most appropriate customer.
