South American food producer Hathor Group is looking to secure US distribution for its Grano cookies and granola.

Argentina-based Hathor - which supplies products including popcorn and chickpeas - has established an office in Chicago and hired a marketing team to develop the US market for Brazilian brand Grano.

An "aggressive" marketing campaign will promote how a Brazilian lifestyle could be a healthy and natural way to stay energetic during daily activities, according to Hathor Group sales manager Mateus Dalmago.

Grano cookies and granola haven’t officially launched in the US but several grocery stores have already expressed an interests in distributing them, the company said.

The granola range comprises three flavors - banana & honey; cocoa & coconut and coconut & Brazil nut - and the cookie range includes granola, cocoa and Brazil nut flavors.

Two packaging formats

Both Grano's granola and cookie lines are sold in two packaging formats: a regular 10.58 oz granola box retailing at $5.40; and box of five 'lunchbox' granola packs for $4.70. The cookies are available in a 8.82 oz regular box at $5.40; and 'lunchbox' format that contains five cookies and retails at $4.70. None of the products contains trans-fat or preservatives.

The lunchboxes are smaller than regular ones, and they are designed to for consumers who don't have enough time to snack during the day, Dalmago said.

Hathor said the lunchbox formats were suitable for consumers who prefer to have cookies and granola on-the-go.

Analyst firm Euromonitor has said the shrinking size of US households and demand for snack foods will continue to drive the on-the-go market.

Amazon Cookie brand

Hathor was showcasing the products to buyers at the Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago, where it was also exhibiting its Amazon Cookie brand that is available in Acai, Cupuacu and Guarana berry flavors. Hathor said the Amazon cookie flavors were unique to Brazil. The suggested retail price is $5.40 for a 8.82-ounce box.

The Amazon line is currently not available in a lunchbox format, but Hathor plans to develop the format for the product line soon.

Dalmago added the company was also gathering information regarding what flavors are popular with American consumers during the Expo, and will add new cookie flavors later this year.

“We try to bring these boxes to the US because it’s very well accepted in Brazil," Dalmago told BakeryandSnacks. "America has many granola and cookie products, but they don’t have particular Brazilian flavors.”
