The list of snack products affected by concerns they be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes has continued to grow in the past seven days.

Businesses including Treehouse Foods, SunOpta, Kroger and Giant Eagle withdrew snacks and other foods from sale early last week after being alerted by suppliers that sunflower seeds in the products may be contaminated with L. monocytogenes.

These are the bacteria that can cause listeriosis, a disease that primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A person with listeriosis will typically have fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

The list of businesses that has recalled products includes Creative Snacks Co. of Greensboro, North Carolina. On May 5 it announced the recall of various batch codes of16 lines distributed to retailers nationwide and sold in a variety of formats including plastic rigid containers, small re-sealable bags and in bulk.

And Hickory Harvest has recalled a range of sunflower kernels distributed from its site in Akron, Ohio, between February 15, 2016 and May 2, 2016.

Both businesses said they had been made aware of the possible contamination by their supplier, SunOpta.
