The new OpTech-02 Platinum is a standard-setting oxygen analyser which delivers results within 0.5 seconds and can be used for both package development and quality assurance during production, claims its manufacturer Mocon.

Specific benefits for the food and beverage industry include: Its ability to read small headspace areas,” a spokesman for the company told FoodProductionDaily.com. “It allows users to accurately track the results from multiple packages simply by selecting the correct record with the option barcode reader. And it measures dissolved oxygen in a liquid and gathers data for self life analysis,” he added.

The company claims it has a greater range of oxygen detection than any comparable system. It detects oxygen contents from 0.001 to 25%.

In addition to oxygen testing, it can also be so be used to detect lead and permeation rates.

Bar code tracking

Available with an optional bar code tracking system, the analyser can be used to track oxygen levels during distribution offering non destructive shelf-life analysis.

The company claims that OpTech-02’s Platinum chemistry lasts longer and does not diminish. Also the sensors are reusable.

The analyser uses a florescence-based system for measuring total package integrity for both rigid and flexible packages. The platinum fluoresces or emits light in an amount that is directly related to the amount of oxygen present in a package. This fluorescence can then be read optically making it suitable for non-destructive permeation analysis, headspace and dissolved oxygen analysis and leak determination.

No calibration gas is needed and the equipment is supplied with a CalCard for two-point calibration.

Increased sensitivity

The testers’ platinum chemistry offers greater range, increased sensitivity and is stable in ambient light, claims the company, it is also said to be less affected by temperature changes and uses visible non-uv light source for simple, accurate aiming.

Versatile software allows operators to run an unlimited number of concurrent tests and continuously monitor oxygen content in real time. Using bar codes, or test numbers previous sample data can be automatically retrieved.

OpTech-02 Platinum is available worldwide and costs $7500.

The equipment is being featured at the Drintec event staged at the New Munich Trade Centre, Germany between September 14th and 19th.
