FoodProductionDaily was on the exhibition floor of Ipack-Ima last week to find the news and opinions from the trade event in Milan.

Below includes the latest from Markem-Imaje, Altech, Akro Flex, Sealed Air and Sonoco-Alcore plus more.

Markem-Imaje and Akro Flex

Markem-Imaje presented the 9410 from the 9400 Series, a range of multi-substrate inkjet printers.

The marking and coding specialist displayed the SmartLase C 350 HD laser coder for fast high-definition coding and the 1200 thermal inkjet printer for high speed coding of secondary packaging.

The firm said the Mark & Read system with CoLOS networking software in partnership with Cognex, can help drive line efficiency and prevent missing codes and code quality issues.

Meanwhile, a type of edging device intended for cast stretch film co-extrusion plants has been designed and built by the engineering division of Akro Flex.

The patented device generates reinforcement on the edges of the stretch film thanks to a particular winding process the derived coils are flat.

It enables the edging of low-gauge film (7 micron non pre-stretched) and improves the pre-stretch properties by at least 25%, claims the firm.

Sonoco and Sealed Air raise prices

Sonoco-Alcore will raise prices by €50 per metric ton on all recycled paperboard grades sold in the company's Italian region. The price change is effective with shipments on or after June 15.

“This price increase is in response to rising material and manufacturing costs and price adjustments occurring in the Italian market," said Phil Woolley, director, Paper Europe.

Sealed Air also revealed a price increase of up to 5% for the majority of its European Product Care and Food Care division packaging products, effective July 1.

“Our European price increases are in response to the continued escalation of our key raw materials and other input costs in particular polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, as all major petrochemical suppliers increased prices over the last five months,” said Jonathon Durnford, VP Food Care Europe

“Cumulatively, since January 2015, our petrochemical suppliers have increased their prices between 15 to 27%,” added Gerd Wichmann, VP, Product Care Europe.

Altech and Cerutti Packaging

Altech said a survey by the trade fair organizer revealed countries the Italian firms exhibiting at IPACK-IMA consider the most promising are: Russia, USA, Turkey, Brazil, Poland, Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Canada, in that order.

The industrial labelling machines and print-apply systems produced by the company, based in Bareggio, near Milan, are used by companies in industries including food and beverage.

The self-adhesive labelling systems that Altech displayed included, the linear system ALline for front and back or wrap-around labelling of cylindrical or elliptical products and the ALbelt for top and bottom labelling of trays with a C-wrap seal label.

Cerutti Packaging Equipment launched the gravure model R98X for packaging and speciality printing.

It combines the 980 and R970 series, allowing a reduction of production costs and start-up waste thanks to job change over, printing cylinder and inking system handling, autopreset systems.

Clever Machines and Irplast

Clever Machines, an exhibitor at the show, was the subject of a case study involving ProSoft.

A client came to the firm needing to reduce downtime on a Clever Sleever Machine due to maintenance of rings and Clever contacted Rockwell Automation.

Rockwell suggested they use ProSoft Technology’s 802.11n Fast Roaming Industrial Hotspot radios and a 5 GHz radiating cable as the antenna.

The 802.11n Fast Roaming Hotspot supports Access Point, Repeater, Bridging and Client modes and delivers data rates up to 300 Mbps.

Now a CompactLogix L36, communicates to the Point I/O through ProSoft Technology’s radios, providing data from the rounding tables which apply the label and heat-seal them to the bottles.

Irplast gave a preview presentation of Tamper Evident 2.0, the upgrade of Irplast security tape at the event.

The firm produces bi-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film by its BIMO subsidiary and printed adhesive tapes and labels as Irplast.

This integration offers opportunities for R&D initiatives on films, thanks to the possibility to test the conversion and application performance of products, it added.
