Cardia Bioplastics, a subsidiary of SECOS Group, has secured European patent protection for its bioplastics technology.

The European Patent 2052030 was granted for its compostable resin formulations and production processes.

Cardia currently has 28 granted patents

This marks an important milestone for Cardia Bioplastics,” said Dr. Frank Glatz, CEO, Cardia Bioplastics.

These granted patents protect the intellectual property of the company and further support the technical differentiation of our globally certified Cardia Compostable and independently validated lower carbon foot print Cardia Biohybrid product offering.”

Nine Cardia Compostable, Biohybrid and PPC-starch technology patents have been granted in 2015.

These patents expand Cardia Bioplastics intellectual property portfolio of 11 patent families, with 28 patents so far granted in Europe, US, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa, and 39 more patents pending registration.

The patents protect the composition formulations, manufacturing processes and application technology invented by Cardia’s Research & Development team.

Superior puncture & tear resistance

According to Glatz, Cardia Compostable films are strong and tough with good sealability and long shelf life.

They display superior puncture, tear resistance and impact toughness. Its products are breathable and can control odour and dissipating moisture, used in a variety of applications from films, bags and moulded products to waste management items.

The biodegradable and compostable plastics market is projected to continue its rapid growth due to increased Government regulation of environmental issues and waste management.

Markets and Markets Research Group predicts the global biodegradable and compostable plastics market to be worth more than US$3.4bn by 2020. (Biodegradable Plastics Market by Type, by Application - Global Trends & Forecasts to 2020).
