Bread manufacturer Warburtons’ new range of naan breads will make it the first major UK bakery brand to enter the Indian food sector, the firm has claimed.

Warburtons has been working closely with Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar to create the product, which is available this month.

The move comes as part of Warburtons’ bid to increase its presence as part of the UK’s evening meal category and boost the naan market, which is worth £59M.

The firm revealed that the meal accompaniments sector currently made up just 5% of the bakery market.

Bakery brand

Warburtons will be the first major UK bakery brand to enter the Indian sector with the new evening meal accompaniment breads,” a statement from the firm revealed.

With chicken curry currently the nation’s second favourite home-cooked dish, and with approximately half of UK consumers eating Indian food at least every two weeks, Warburtons is looking to capitalise on the growth opportunity for the category.”

The move was praised by Kochhar, who stressed the “versatility” of the breads, which will be available in plain and garlic forms.
