Micvac, famous for its ‘whistling’ ready-meal trays has seen huge success with its porridge range in Norway, launching smaller pack sizes to meet consumer demand.

The company, based in Sweden, opened an office in France last year and attended SIAL, Paris this week (October 16-20) and received an innovation award for its two compartment tray featuring one valve.

Extending the shelf life

Its ‘whistling’ tray, know as the Micvac method, was invented by Dr Joel Haamer to cook a product while retaining its taste without preservatives and extending the shelf life.

The packaging whistles when the food is cooked in a microwave via a valve, which lets out a sound to let consumers know the food is ready.

Håkan Pettersson, CEO, Micvac, told BakeryandSnacks, the porridge uses the Micvac method as well which offers a lot of convenience to the consumer.

Porridge is a popular meal in Norway because it is not only consumed at breakfast time but eaten as a snack during the day. We recently released a Super Porridge product in smaller pack sizes.”

Pettersson said there has been a lot of activity at Micvac lately gaining new customers worldwide, such as in South Korea and in Colombia.

Daesang Corporation, South Korea

Daesang Corporation, in South Korea, launched chilled ready meals produced with the Micvac microwave technology in December 2015.

The Micvac production line is installed in one of Daesang’s factories and therange of chilled ready meals consists of six products in three different sizes, 240g, 390g and 395g.

The recipes are influenced by cuisine from various parts of the world, such as Korea, China and Europe.

It also carried out a consumer study in the UK this year to better understand the market and consumers’ preferences for chilled ready meals.

One of our customers recently launched recipes in the new two compartment tray and more will follow”, he added.
