Another major US manufacturer has voluntarily recalled products over fears they may contain undeclared peanut residue.

Following recalls by Frito-Lay and Hostess, Kellogg has recalled certain varieties and production batches of Keebler, Special K, Murray, Famous Amos and Mother’s products sold at retail, and a selection of Keebler lines produced for the foodservice channel (see table below). The products were distributed throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

The affected businesses had used flour supplied by Grain Craft, which had previously alerted the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that peanut residue had been discovered in its soft red winter wheat flour.

This prompted a recall of the flour, and products manufactured by CSM Bakery Solutions using it. On June 3, Hostess recalled products including Zingers and Ding Dongs containing flour it had received from Grain Craft, and PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay business last week announced a voluntary recall of select Rold Gold pretzels.

FDA working with manufacturers

The FDA is working with companies that received flour from Grain Craft containing undeclared peanut residue to determine if their products pose a safety hazard and need to be recalled.

While consumers with severe peanut allergies should avoid the recalled products, the FDA has stated the amount of peanut exposure from the flour is low and not expected to cause adverse health effects in the vast majority of peanut allergic consumers,” said Kellogg.

The company has received no reports of related illness to date and is taking this action out of an abundance of caution.”

Frito-Lay recall updated

Meanwhile, Frito-Lay has this week update to its previously announced Rold Gold pretzels recall. While the specific Rold Gold products remain unchanged, the manufacturer has updated the ‘use by’ dates for two multipacks that might contain the affected Rold Gold 1 oz. Tiny Twists pretzels:

  • 20-count Baked & Popped Mix – ‘use by’ dates ranging from May 31 – August 9, 2016
  • 32-count Fun Times Mix – ‘use by’ dates ranging from May 31 – August 9, 2016.
