A second major case of bread contamination in the past week is set
to put bakeries on the alert for contamination risks, as leading US
bakery Sara Lee announces the recall of a number of its products.

The recall follows the risk that the products may contain pieces of metal and plastic, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported last week. The Sara Lee products at risk were baked at the company's Vernon, California bakery, which distributes to retailers across Arizona, California, Hawaii and Navada. The contaminated products include bagels, artisan bread, muffins and pita bread. In the same week, leading UK industrial bakery Allied Bakeries reported fragments of glass and sewing needles in its Kingsmill sliced bread products. The contamination in this case is suspected to be deliberate. "The police, Allied Bakeries and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) are keeping a close eye on the case," said an FSA spokesperson, but could not reveal further information as the investigation is still underway. According to the company, the foreign objects were clearly visible once the bread bag was opened, and were not embedded in the bread. As yet there appears to be no plans for a recall.
